Drip edge is one of the cheapest parts of a roof and one of the most commonly skipped. It is a strip of bent metal along the edges of your roof, it costs very little, and leaving it off quietly rots the wood underneath your gutters. It is also required by code on most homes built or reroofed in the last decade. Here is what it does and how to make sure yours is actually there and actually new.
What drip edge is
Drip edge is an L-shaped or T-shaped metal flashing installed along the edges of your roof, at the eaves (the lower horizontal edge, where the gutter is) and the rakes (the sloped edges of a gable). Its job is simple: direct water off the roof and into the gutter instead of letting it cling to the underside of the shingles and wick back under the edge. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association treats it as standard practice at both edges.
Without it, water creeps back under the roof edge and soaks the fascia, the vertical trim board your gutter hangs on, and the edge of the decking. Over time that wood rots. It has been code since 2012
This is the part most homeowners do not know. Metal drip edge at eaves and rakes was not required by the International Residential Code until the 2012 edition, under section R905.2.8.5 for asphalt shingle roofs. Most jurisdictions have since adopted that code, so a new roof today is required to have it. You can read the current code section.
The practical consequence: if your home was last roofed before about 2012, there is a real chance it has no drip edge at all, and the edge of your roof has been exposed the whole time. A reroof is the moment to fix that. The code even specifies the details, that pieces overlap at least 2 inches and are fastened no more than 12 inches apart, so an inspector can check it.
A model code, adopted locally
The IRC is a model code that states and cities adopt on their own timelines, so "required since 2012" is true of the model code and true in most places, but the exact year your jurisdiction adopted it can vary. Either way, on a new roof today, drip edge is almost certainly required where you live.
Types and materials
Drip edge comes in a few standard profiles, and the names get used loosely, so it helps to know them:
- Type C is the simple L-shaped bend, the most common and affordable.
- Type D is a T-shaped profile with a lower flange that throws water further from the fascia. The manufacturers association favors this style.
- Type F, sometimes called a gutter apron, has a longer leading edge and is used at the eave over a gutter.
Materials run from aluminum, which is the most common and resists corrosion, to galvanized steel for high-wind areas, up to copper for looks and longevity. For most homes, color-matched aluminum is the sensible default.
Drip edge versus gutter apron
These two get confused constantly, and the difference is worth understanding because you often need both. Standard drip edge goes at the rake edges, where there is no gutter, and simply sheds water off the fascia. A gutter apron is the longer-flanged piece at the eave, over the gutter, and its extended lip reaches past the back of the gutter so water drops into the trough instead of running down behind it.
The failure this prevents is common: without a proper apron at the eave, water can slip behind the gutter and run down the fascia, rotting exactly the board the gutter is bolted to. If your fascia is staining even though your gutters look fine, this is a prime suspect.
How cheap roofers cut this corner
Because drip edge is cheap and buried under the shingle edge, it is easy to skip or to reuse the old, dented metal even when the estimate says to replace it. Skipping it leaves your fascia exposed and can fail a code inspection. Reusing old drip edge is only acceptable if it is genuinely in good shape, and if the fascia rotted, the old metal usually should not go back on.
Since you are paying for it, verify you got it:
- Look along the eaves and rakes for clean, bright new metal running continuously under the shingle edge. New drip edge looks new; old metal is dull, dented, or faded.
- Confirm it is a line item on your invoice, not folded silently into a lump sum.
- Photograph the edges before the crew leaves, close-ups of both an eave and a rake.
- If in doubt, a third-party roof inspection can confirm it was installed to code.

One nuance in cold climates
The order of installation matters. At the rake, drip edge goes over the underlayment so wind-driven rain cannot lift the underlayment edge. At the eave, code puts it under the underlayment. In cold climates prone to ice dams, good roofers use a hybrid approach, sealing the sheathing-to-fascia joint with a strip of self-adhering membrane so backed-up meltwater cannot sneak behind the drip edge. Drip edge helps at the edge, but on its own it does not prevent ice dams. That job belongs to insulation, ventilation, and an ice-and-water membrane.
