After a big storm, a snow-covered roof looks peaceful, and most of the time it is fine. But snow is heavier than people think, and heavy wet snow or ice can push a roof past what it was built to hold. The tricky part is that the depth of the snow tells you almost nothing. What matters is the water inside it. Here is how to think about roof snow load, the warning signs that a roof is overloaded, and how to clear it without getting hurt.

It is the water, not the depth

Snow load is measured in pounds per square foot, and the single most useful fact is that snow weight depends on water content, not how deep it looks. The physics anchor is exact: one inch of water spread over a square foot weighs about 5.2 pounds. So a fluffy foot of dry powder and a compacted foot of old wet snow can weigh completely different amounts. Using figures the Department of Energy’s building science center draws from the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety:

  • Fresh, light snow adds roughly half a pound to a pound per inch of depth. About 10 to 12 inches of it equals an inch of water, around 5 pounds per square foot.
  • Old, packed snow is far denser. Just 3 to 5 inches of it can equal an inch of water, so it adds one to nearly two pounds per inch.
  • Ice is the heavy one, roughly 5 pounds per square foot per inch. A rule worth remembering: one inch of ice weighs about the same as a foot of fresh snow.

Put those together and you see how it adds up. Two feet of old snow with two feet of fresh on top can approach 60 pounds per square foot, and a foot of solid ice alone is around 57. Those numbers get into territory that stresses a typical home’s roof.

How much a roof can take

Roofs are engineered to a design snow load based on the local ground snow load, a code requirement that varies enormously by region. It is near zero across much of the South, 20 to 40 or more pounds per square foot across the northern states, and can exceed 100 in high mountain and lake-effect snow zones. Your roof was built to your area’s number.

As a practical rule of thumb, the Insurance Institute figures suggest a typical residential roof starts to be stressed somewhere around 20 pounds per square foot of snow. Translated to depth, that is roughly up to four feet of fresh snow, but only about two feet of old packed snow, and much less if there is ice. The lesson: judge by wetness and density, not by the number on the yardstick.

The warning signs of an overloaded roof

This is the part to take seriously, because a roof gives you signals before it fails. FEMA’s snow load guidance lists the signs that mean you should leave the building and call a professional. Watch and listen for:

  • A sagging roof or ceiling, or a visibly bowed ridgeline.
  • Creaking, cracking, or popping sounds from the structure.
  • Doors or windows that suddenly stick, or a door that pops open on its own, both signs the frame is distorting under load.
  • New cracks in drywall or plaster, especially where walls meet the ceiling or near door frames.
  • Sprinkler heads or utility pipes that have started to drop below the ceiling.
  • Sudden or severe roof leaks.

If you see these, the concern is structural, and a sagging roof under snow load is not something to investigate from inside. Get out and call a structural engineer and your local building department.

When in doubt, get out

FEMA is clear that if there is any concern of imminent collapse, you stop and evacuate rather than keep clearing snow. A roof that is creaking and sticking its doors is talking to you. Removing snow can help, but not at the cost of standing under a roof that is about to come down. People matter more than the house.

Who is actually at risk

Not all roofs are equal under snow. A steep pitched residential roof usually sheds snow and rarely collapses. The real risk sits with flat and low-slope roofs, which hold everything that falls on them, and with lightly built structures: detached garages, porches, carports, sunrooms, pole barns, and older additions, which were often built to a lower capacity than the main house.

Two extra hazards concentrate weight. Drifting piles snow deeper in valleys and behind anything that blocks the wind. And snow sliding off a higher roof onto a lower one both piles up and can deliver a sudden impact load. If part of your home is a low-slope addition below a bigger roof, that is the spot to watch.

How to clear it safely

If the load is getting heavy, remove snow the safe way:

  1. Use a roof rake from the ground. An extendable roof rake lets you pull snow off the eaves while keeping both feet on the ground, which is the whole point.
  2. Leave about two to three inches of snow rather than scraping to the bare roof, so you do not gouge the shingles, and let gravity do the work instead of forcing the rake down.
  3. Never climb onto a snowy or icy roof. You risk a fall, and you add your own weight to a structure that may already be overloaded.
  4. For large amounts, or a steep or high roof, hire a professional snow-removal crew that works with proper fall protection.
