A cool roof is exactly what it sounds like: a roof built to reflect sunlight and shed heat instead of soaking it up. On a hot afternoon that can mean a roof surface tens of degrees cooler, and a lower air-conditioning bill. But the savings depend heavily on where you live, and in the wrong climate a cool roof can actually cost you. Here is the honest version.
What makes a roof "cool"
Two properties do the work. Solar reflectance, or albedo, is the fraction of sunlight a surface bounces away instead of absorbing. Thermal emittance is how efficiently it radiates away the heat it does absorb. A cool roof scores high on both. The US Department of Energy defines a cool roof simply as one designed to reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat than a conventional roof.
The two properties are often combined into a single number, the Solar Reflectance Index, or SRI, where a standard black surface is 0 and a standard white surface is 100. The higher the SRI, the cooler the roof runs. And importantly, cool no longer means white: modern "cool color" pigments reflect strongly in the near-infrared, so dark-looking shingles can be genuinely cool roofs, even if a bright white roof still reflects the most.
How much cooler, and how much cheaper
The temperature difference is real and large. Research from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found a clean white roof reflecting 80 percent of sunlight stays about 55 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than a gray roof reflecting only 20 percent. The Department of Energy puts it as a cool roof staying more than 50 degrees cooler than a standard roof, which can hit around 150 degrees in peak afternoon sun.
That surface difference translates into cooling savings, though more modestly than the temperature gap suggests. The EPA finds reflective roofs can cut peak cooling demand by 11 to 27 percent. For a typical home with a shingle roof, federal building-science research points to something in the single-digit to low-double-digit range of cooling savings, not the headline maximums. The DOE figure often cited is roughly 50 cents per square foot per year in a warm climate. Real, but not enormous.
The honest framing on savings
Cool roofs shine brightest in commercial and flat-roof studies in hot climates. On a residential shingle roof, expect a meaningful but modest dent in your cooling costs, larger if your attic is poorly insulated and smaller if it is well insulated. Anyone promising your bill will be cut in half is overselling it.
The types of cool roof
A cool roof is a category, not a single product:
- Reflective or cool-colored asphalt shingles, for standard sloped roofs.
- Reflective coatings, usually white elastomeric, applied to flat and low-slope roofs, which can reflect 60 to 90 percent of sunlight.
- Cool tile, in terra cotta or concrete with a reflective finish.
- Metal roofing with a reflective coating.
- White single-ply membranes like TPO on low-slope roofs.

Where cool roofs make sense, and where they backfire
This is the part most articles skip, and it is the most important. A cool roof reflects heat all year, which is a gift in summer and a small penalty in winter, when you would actually like some of that solar warmth. In hot, sunny climates the summer savings dominate and a cool roof is close to a no-brainer. In cold, heating-dominated climates the winter penalty can partly or fully cancel the summer savings.
Federal building-science guidance from PNNL is specific: cool roofs are almost always beneficial in the hot South and Southwest, meaning states like Florida, Texas, Arizona, and southern California, usually beneficial in mild climates, and generally an energy penalty in cold northern zones. If you live where summers are brutal and winters are mild, a cool roof is a strong move. If you live where winter heating dominates, it may not pay.

What it costs, and how to verify a product
On a flat roof, reflective coatings run roughly 1 to 3 dollars per square foot in DOE figures, with installed elastomeric coatings landing across a similar range depending on the chemistry. On a sloped roof, cool-colored shingles carry little to no premium over comparable architectural shingles in many cases, though the DOE notes some cool products cost up to 20 percent more. To confirm you are actually getting a cool roof, look for an ENERGY STAR certification, or check the product’s ratings in the Cool Roof Rating Council directory, which independently measures reflectance and emittance.
A word on incentives, and the 2026 change
Do not count on a federal tax credit for a cool roof in 2026. The Section 25C efficiency credit ended after December 31, 2025 under the 2025 budget law, and even while it existed, roofing itself had generally been removed from eligibility years earlier. The IRS is the source to check.
